kristen diederich / they said no dancing / april 4 - 26, 2024

This body of work invites light and color as acts of movement onto surfaces. An archaeology of movement emerges through writing and dancing from which Diederich brings a new sense to her paintings — time passing in bright color and impasto forms. In these arcs of light and color on canvas with interspersed textures of sand reminiscent of frescos, Diederich realizes differing ways of processing and communicating passionately. It is in some rainbow that we learn the fluctuating duration of incarnate loss. This progression inherent in Diederich’s visual work is  a practice of being flexible in a body while filtering information. What the body notices is felt in the titles of her paintings, which she pulls from an ever growing poem document. They Said No Dancing playfully connects to Diederich’s visit to NYC with Travel PDX for an arts and fine dining crossover event. During this trip, she noticed signs in the bars, directing the behavior of bar goers. Towing the line of acceptability in form and color Diederich holds the mindset of a tourist – a train derails or is late. The sea is rising with swimmers. In each Cathedral, a different artist of their time. It is often a question of place, where and when a foot slips on a rock on the pier. It is without reason we are gifted a thousand eternal (shining) torrents outside of judgment (time) into an arc, eventually scattered through nature.
